What's New from MSE....

Signal & point operating parts

SM7 is a new type of solenoid for point and signal operation. As it is continuously rated, only a simple on/off (SPST) switch is needed for operation, and it may be left switched on without worrying about overheating and consequent damage.

D.G. Couplings

The D.G. range of magnetically-operated autocouplings is now part of Model Signal Engineering. Full details of the range can be found on the revised Couplings page below. Existing D.G. customers should note that cheques should now be made payable to Model Signal Engineering - or if you wish to pay by card, click here to see how.

Sprat & Winkle couplings:

Trial packs are now available in 2mm scale, 4mm scale, 4mm finescale and 7mm scale. Containing 8 couplings and mounting plates, wires and a permanent magnet, they are ideal for the modeller wishing to try out Sprat & Winkle couplings without incurring the expense of a starter pack. Order T/ACN/3 (£3.00) for 2mm scale, T/AC3/3 (£5.00) for 4mm finescale, T/AC4/3 (£5.00) for curves below 2ft radius in 4mm scale, and T/AC7/3 (£6.50) for 7mm scale.

Scale couplings

As well as Sprat and Winkle and D.G. autocouplings, I also sell a range of scale couplings in both 4 and 7mm scales. See the Scale Couplings section of the Couplings page, or the individual scale pages for full details.

Payment by card:

Please click here if you wish to pay by credit or debit card as the range of acceptable cards is now larger, and the information required has changed.

The Australian Journal of Railway Modelling:

I am now the UK agent for this quality publication. See the AJRM section for more information.

D&S Models signal components:

I have taken over the complete range of 2, 4 and 7mm scale signal parts formerly produced by D&S Models. A full list of these items may be found on the D&S page. As time permits, each will be incorporated into the wider MSE range, and will move from the D&S page to the relevant page of the website. Please note that all other D&S items (eg rolling stock and the signal box kits) remain with D&S Models, who can be contacted at:

C+L Finescale track construction parts and Carr's items:

I will not be re-ordering these products. Contrary to previous announcements, some stock remains - see the revised C+L/Carr's page for details.

In 2mm scale:

The ex-D&S 2mm scale parts, never previously on general sale, are now being released. The first to be available are:

SN1, an etch of signal post fittings - balance levers, cranks and their brackets (£2.00).
SN9/7, two 220' etched brass ladders (£1.50).
SN40, GNR/LNER 23' lattice base post, for use with bracket signals and gantries (£2.00).
SN42, two GNR/LNER 23' lattice posts - cut them to use as bracket/gantry dolls, or add to SN40 for a sky arm (£4.00).

In 3mm scale:

The promised McKenzie & Holland ground signal kits are now available. Coded GST3, they are £3.50 for a pack of 3 signals. More 3mm scale parts are to follow in the Autumn.

In 4mm scale:

A new complete signal kit for NER/LNER/BR(NE) modellers is S4/KE5, price £7.00. This represents the distinctive lower quadrant slotted post single arm home or distant signal.

The S4/KW1 complete kit for a GWR 4' wooden arm/post home or distant signal is now available, price £7.00. The arm fret used in the kit is also in stock (S0014/1, price £1.75). Detailed web pages for these two items are in preparation. The 5' arm kit (S4/KW2) should follow soon. The artwork for the tubular post type (S4/KW3) is well advanced, but I need to check a few dimensions before it can be finished.

LOC403 - the Bill Bedford handrail bending jig. Makes perfect handrails from scale 3 to 53" long in 1" steps. Wire up to a maximum of around 0.6mm may be used, and with care, it can also be used as a drilling jig for the fixing holes. It is also highly suitable for bending the wire in Sprat & Winkle autocouplings. The price is just £1.80 - how did you ever manage without one?

LOC404 – OO back-to-back gauge (£5.00). Following numerous enquiries at exhibitions, I have now produced a gauge for standard OO. Set to 14.5mm long, it matches recent Hornby and Bachmann production. Note that Heljan use 14.4mm, so use the gauge to reset their wheels to match those of other manufacturers. Gauges for OO finescale (LOC405), EM (LOC406) and P4 (LOC407) are also available at the same price.

LOC408 – 13" turned steel wagon buffers (12 for £2.00). A neat replacement for the buffers supplied in many plastic wagon kits. With a 3" (1.0mm) diameter spindle, they are suitable for most post-Grouping wagon types. 15" (LOC409); 16" (LOC412) and 18" (LOC410) are also available at the same price, the first two for long wheelbase wagons and the last for most air-braked types. LOC411 is the pre-Grouping equivalent, with a 12" head and 2½" (0.83mm) spindle.

In 7mm scale:

The S7/KW1 complete kit for a GWR 4' wooden arm/post home or distant signal is now available, price £16.00. The arm fret used in the kit is also in stock (S014/1, price £3.50). Detailed web pages for these two items are in preparation. The 5' arm kit (S7/KW2) should follow soon. The artwork for the tubular post type (S7/KW3) is well advanced, but I need to check a few dimensions before it can be finished.

Progress on the promised cast brass rail-built post kit (S7/KS1): the test casts were not good enough, and the master is to be revised.
