S7/KE4 7mm scale LNER wooden post upper quadrant signal kit

This kit represents one of the early designs of standard LNER signals, consisting of an upper quadrant arm on a tapered wooden post, with an LNWR-type post top and square lamp. This type of signal was used for some renewals and new installations, until the switch to tubular steel posts (kit S7/KE1) in the mid-1930s. Lattice post signals were also being installed at the same time. Some examples may still be in use on Network Rail today.

The kit can be built as a home or distant signal in any height up to 27ft6in. However, the instructions only cover the provision of a lampman's ladder safety hoop. This is correct for signals up to 20ft tall. For heights above this, it is possible that a platform is required. More photographic evidence is sought.

The kit is designed for mostly soldered construction, but Araldite or superglue can be used in more places, particularly if the finished signal is not intended to operate. Some simple marking out, cutting and shaping of parts is required. To see exactly what is involved in constructing this kit, download the instruction sheet as an Adobe Acrobat® file (112kb).
